Key words: vitrectomy 23G, clear corneal phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation, proliferative diabetic retinopathy

Purpose: To evaluate the results and complications of combined 23-gauge sutureless vitrectomy, clear corneal phacoemulsification, and intraocular lens implantation in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Methods. This was a retrospective study of 132 eyes of 132 patients who underwent combined sutureless vitrectomy and clear corneal cataract surgery for the complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The main outcome measures were visual outcomes and surgical complications. Indications for the surgery were vitreous hemorrhage and tractional retinal detachment.

Results. Primary anatomical result was obtain in 94.7 %, final anatomical result — in 94.7 %, Visual acuity improved in 72.7 %, was stable in 15.9 % and decrease in 11.4 % patients. Intraoperative retinal tear occurred in 15.9 % and hemorrhage in 65.9 %. During the 6 months after surgery, only 2 eye (1.5 %) developed retinal detachment and 7eyes (5.3 %) required a repeat vitrectomy Conclusion. Combined 23-gauge sutureless vitrectomy and clear corneal phacoemulsi-fication in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy was safe and effective.
