The paper presents characteristics of traumatic injuries of the eyeball in 21 patients (23 eyes) developed due to explosion of petards.
Most patients (77 %) received trauma during the Christmas holidays. At the moment of admission to the institute 7 patients (30 %) had zero acuity of vision. Hemophthalm was observed in 60 % of patients, 22 % had retinal detachment. On admission 29 % had subatrophy of the eyeball.
In open trauma the main localization of the injury was corneoscleral area. In close trauma there was subconjunctival rupture in three eyes. There were injuries of the eyelids and bone walls of the orbit in 41 % of cases. The surgical treatment was given in over 90 % of cases; three patients (14 %) had enucleation of the eyeball to prevent sympathetic inflammation.
